  • M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy: Designed for those seeking marriage and family therapist licensure
  • M.S. in Mental Health Counseling: Satisfies New York State education requirements for licensure as a mental health counselor
  • Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling: Learn to assess issues and provide mental health counseling and psychotherapy
  • M.A. in School Counseling: Prepares graduate students for certification as K–12 counselors in New York State
  • Advanced Certificate in School Counseling: Designed for students who are eligible for provisional certification in New York State

Gain Real-World Experience

Each program curriculum requires students to complete internships, therapy hours or other hands-on learning experiences designed to immerse them in the world of their careers. For example, students in the M.A. in School Counseling program complete a counseling internship under the supervision of a local school counselor in a K–12 setting, while M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy students complete 500 hours of supervised therapy.

Counseling Programs Application Requirements

  • Applicants for master’s programs must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or institution.
  • Applicants for advanced certificates must hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees, both from accredited institutions.
  • Generally, an undergraduate GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale is required, although other factors may be considered in the decision for admission.
  • Ideally, applicants should have suitable preparation in the behavioral sciences. Consideration will be given for teaching experience, and other applicable experience. Applicants who possess a bachelor’s degree, but do not have relevant background experience, may be required to take prerequisite courses for admission.
  • Other factors will be considered for admission, such as years of professional experience, a high average in a major field or academic development beyond the bachelor’s degree.
  • Applicants for the Advanced Certificate in School Counseling must hold a bachelor’s degree in school counseling, making them eligible for provisional certification in New York state.
